Videos and QR Codes in the Library
I had the pleasure of reviewing different videos on school library YouTube Channels. Below I included some videos that I thought were the most helpful to students at each library and the ones I thought students would enjoy the most. Enjoy!
Tillery Tutorial Video: Creative Commons 101 for Senior Project Slides
The Creative Commons video seems like it would be one of the more helpful videos because it guides students through the images that they are allowed to use and how to find them. I think that it was short enough to keep students’ attention, but it was long enough to include all of the information that was necessary for students to complete the assignment without violating copyright laws.
Surprise and
Impromptu Holiday Choral Performance at The Unquiet Library!
This librarian does a great job of featuring students in the library doing projects or even performing. I thought this video was really fun and the choir students sounded amazing! Students really enjoy seeing themselves or their friends in pictures and videos. I think that’s why they would have a lot of fun with this. I also think that music pulls at the heartstrings and would please students regardless of whether they knew those specific students or not.
PHS Financial Aid Workshop 2013
There are a lot of videos that this library uploaded that would be useful to students for different reasons. I chose to feature a video about the financial aid process because it’s something that is so new to a lot of students and their parents. It is the first big decision most students have to make, and I think it’s very helpful for the library to include resources that would make paying for college easier.
The
Panthers Library Shakes
This librarian clearly enjoys keeping up with the trends! I know that students would be so excited to see their school doing something they’ve seen on social media. A great example of this and a video that brought back a lot of memories and would’ve probably brought a lot of enthusiasm was the Harlem Shake video, so I had to include it.
NHD Annotation Writing
I found a really incredible and detailed description for writing an annotated bibliography. This is a difficult task that students are going to be asked to do many times in their school careers. This description would even be useful to them in college.
Issues by Julia Michaels Overdue Library Parody
There were so many videos that I think students would love! Parodies of songs and movies reminding students to bring back their books were all over the channel. They all featured students from the school that helped put them all together. I just decided to pick one of the songs I like, but they were all really good!
Looking over the videos from different libraries, I think that the best way to promote the library is to make fun videos that students enjoy. It could be a silly trend or the parodies that I saw reminding students to return books. I would like to make videos about different events, book reviews (librarian, student, and teacher created), and research assistance.
I made a book review about Inside Out & Back Again. I wanted to include images that represented Há’s culture and experience in some way. I tried my best to find images of Vietnam and Alabama which are places that are essential to Há’s story.
Synopsis from Goodreads: For all the ten years of her life, Hà has only known Saigon: the thrills of its markets, the joy of its traditions, and the warmth of her friends close by. But now the Vietnam War has reached her home. Hà and her family are forced to flee as Saigon falls, and they board a ship headed toward hope. In America, Hà discovers the foreign world of Alabama: the coldness of its strangers, the dullness of its food . . . and the strength of her very own family.
Please feel free to view the book review with the QR code below.
I would like to start
using QR codes to display student work. It’s a really easy way to share work that
requires technology. This would include things like videos, recordings, and websites.
I also think that it would
be really cool to include a book trailer with as many books as possible in the
library. I would try my best to at least include them with the books that are being displayed. It could be something done by the librarian at first but eventually
passed on to students and even teachers as well.
Another way to use QR codes
would be to access frequently used websites. This would include the OPAC, any
audiobook websites students can access, and encyclopedias for quick answers.

Astrid, the images you selected for your "Inside out & Back again" trailer are so appropriate and emotional. It's amazing how accessible videos can be for information, book talks/trailers, and sharing student's work. Thank you for sharing what you noticed in this module.
ReplyDeleteHi Astrid, I enjoyed your blog post. The YouTube videos you included are helpful to students and entertaining as well. The book you chose seems really interesting, and the book trailer definitely makes me more inclined to read it. Good job!
ReplyDeleteHi Astrid- I'm a little late to the party, but I like your book trailer about "Inside Out and Back Again." I think book trailers are a great way for us to interest reluctant readers.
ReplyDeleteI love the Harlem Shake parody video you included in this post! It shows that librarians can involve students in the use of technology and with helping promote the library program. Kids want to be involved, and when we invite them to make videos with us, they will feel more connected to their school library.
ReplyDeleteHello, I enjoyed your blog post. I also chose some of the same videos for my blog. This sheds a different light on libraries and what students are used to. There is a stigma that libraries have to be extremely quiet places and no fun is allowed. But showing students that libraries can be exciting and useful at the same time is great! I also tried the QR code that you have, but I decided to go with another app instead. I had issues with it and I found it complicated. Great idea!
